Abstract
The global financial crisis of 2008 and the COVID-19 pandemic have profoundly disrupted the global banking sector. This thesis investigates the impact of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and the COVID-19 pandemic on three dimensions of commercial banks' performance: profitability, liquidity, and capital structure, with a focus on identifying patterns in the relationship between financial crises and each analyzed aspect during different crises. This analysis of bank-specific and macroeconomic factors concludes that while COVID-19 had a short-term negative impact on bank profitability, the GFC was not significant. Certain bank-specific variables, such as Return on Assets, Liquidity Ratio, Net Interest Margin to Total Equity ratio, Debt to Total Equity ratio, and Operational Efficiency ratio, negatively impacted bank profitability. Though COVID-19 did not significantly explain changes in liquidity, the GFC negatively impacted liquidity levels. Liquidity Ratio and Debt to Total Assets ratio had positive effects on bank liquidity, while inflation had a negative influence. While GDP growth had a significant negative impact on capital structure, bank size and the lagged Debt to Total Assets ratio had a positive impact on the present Debt to Total Assets ratio. The GFC did not affect capital structures of banks in this research’s sample significantly.
