Abstract
False friends are a linguistic phenomenon in which two words, similar or equivalent graphically or phonetically in two or more languages have different meanings. Because of this, they pose a difficulty when acquiring a new language, or during translation. False friends can be divided into two categories- if they are not etymologically related at all, they are chance false friends, but if they are of the same etymological origin, they are called semantic false friends. Semantic false friends can then be divided even further, based on the level of concision of their meanings. Those semantic false friends whose meanings are completely different are called full false friends, and those which have several meanings, which may coincide in different languages, are partial false friends. Although English and Croatian are not from the same genetic family, they still share some vocabulary units with the same roots. However, even though those words have the same origin, they still developed new meanings in the two languages.
Abstract (croatian)
Lažni su prijatelji jezični fenomen u kojem dvije riječi, slične ili ekvivalentne grafički ili fonetski u dva ili više jezika, imaju različita značenja. Zbog toga predstavljaju poteškoću prilikom usvajanja novog jezika ili tijekom prevođenja. Lažni se prijatelji mogu podijeliti u dvije kategorije - ako uopće nisu etimološki povezani, nazivaju se slučajni lažni prijatelji, ali ako su istog etimološkog porijekla, riječ je o semantičkim lažnim prijateljima. Semantički lažni prijatelji mogu se nadalje podijeliti uzimajući u obzir razinu podudarnosti njihovih značenja. Oni semantički lažni prijatelji čija su značenja potpuno različita nazivaju se potpunim lažnim prijateljima, a oni koji imaju više značenja, koja se mogu podudarati u različitim jezicima su djelomični lažni prijatelji. Iako engleski i hrvatski nisu iz iste genetske obitelji, ipak dijele neke rječničke jedinice istih korijena. Međutim, iako te riječi imaju isto podrijetlo, ipak su razvile nova značenja u dva jezika
