This thesis analyzes the complex aspects of body shaming and body image in society, with an emphasis on the historical development of beauty standards and their impact on mental health. The introductory section presents the theoretical framework on body shaming and the perception of the human body, while the chapter on the evolution of beauty standards describes changes in the understanding of beauty throughout history and across different cultures. Although society predominantly believes that body image issues mainly affect women, the chapter on body perception focuses on male insecurities and challenges related to social norms and media pressures, highlighting the impact of these factors on men's mental health. The chapter on media portrayal of bodies and celebrities examines the influence of media on shaping beauty standards and shows how celebrities can be targets of body shaming and how they sometimes promote toxic and unrealistic beauty standards. The study explores how media content creates unrealistic body ideals, which can negatively affect people's self-esteem and body perception. Additionally, the chapter on the dangerous consequences of body shaming and adolescent vulnerability considers how body shaming can impact young people's mental health, including long-term consequences such as eating disorders and self-harm, and underscores the need for supporting young people. A survey conducted for this thesis provided insights into respondents' views on the influence of media on beauty perception, the prevalence of body shaming in society, and the differences in experiences between men and women. The survey results contribute to understanding the social and individual aspects of this issue, and the conclusion presents positive messages from respondents addressed to those who have felt insecure due to their physical appearance.
