Abstract Udaljavanje od poimanja krajobraza kao prostora dominiranog vizualnim atributima ka dinamičnoj i sveobuhvatnoj percepciji krajobraza kao holističkog entiteta pridonosi njegovom boljem razumijevanju.
Krajobrazne metrike predstavljaju dodatni alat krajobraznim planerima pomoću kojeg, uz ograničeno znanje o ekološkim procesima, i pažljivim odabirom kriterija, mogu objektivno i kvantitativno procijeniti i opisati ekološko stanje krajobraza na temelju njegove strukture.
Abstract (english) Moving away from the notion of the landscape as a space dominated by visual attributes to a more dynamic and comprehensive perception of the landscape as a holistic entity, contributes to its better understanding. Ways to achieve a sustainable landscape can be found in landscape ecology and landscape planning. These are closely related interdisciplinary approaches to studying the landscape and the interrelationships between natural and anthropogenic processes in spatial and temporal context. Knowledge about the effects of human activities on the environment is exploited by landscape planning to avoid future devastation, correct past mistakes, and to create and maintain a healthy and satisfactory living conditions for humans and other species. The primary purpose of landscape planning is to preserve the fundamental values of the landscape while it is adapted to the increasingly demanding human needs. The contribution of landscape ecology in this process is in the understanding of structure and function of the landscape, and their changes over time, as the main reason of the landscape heterogeneity. Landscape is our heritage, and it is necessary to understand it and sustainably plan it so we could hand it over to the future generations.
This paper presents the possibility of using landscape metrics in the process of vulnerability analysis of landscape qualities by using the multi-criteria spatial analysis. Landscape metrics were used as the basis for an objective quantitative evaluation of spatial structure of the landscape, as an indicator of its ecological condition and are prerequisites for the study of its function and change in a given time. Landscape metrics represent an additional tool for landscape planners who, with limited knowledge about ecological processes and with careful selection of criteria, can use it to objectively and quantitatively assess and describe the ecological condition of the landscape based on its structure.
