Studies into the dynamics of instantaneous moisture content in the soil in soybean cultivation, which would point to the necessity to regulate soil moisture regime, is scarce. The mentioned studies may be conducted by monitoring the soil moisture regime that shows periodic changes in moisture with regard to profile depth. The results of such studies give insight into the possible occurrence of excess or lack of precipitation water in the soil. Elementary aims of this paper is to determine the soil moisture regime at the Experiment station Maksimir of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Zagreb in the vegetation period (April - September) in the conditions of soybean cultivation during 2018, and to determine if there is a difference in soil moisture regime in well and poorly developed habitus soybeans in the study period. In addition, the aim of the research was to determine soil and climate characteristics at the research site and to assess the correspondence of soil moisture regime with the balance of precipitation water in the soil. Soil sampling was perfomed at several control sites, at a depth of 0-30 cm in 3 repetitions, repeatedly during vegetation. Moisture content was determined by gravimetric method. The soil at the study location is eutric brown and is characterized by loamy textured, acid soil reaction, average soil water capacity, low air soil capacity, average volume density and low porosity. It was found a significant difference between the 2018. climate features and perennial averages. The soil moisture regime did not indicate any significant differences between development of well and poorly habitus, so it can be concluded that instantaneous soil moisture was not the cause of lag in growth. The calculation of the precipitation balance in the soil showed a shortage of water in July and August, which matches the results of the soil moisture regime. The results of soil characteristics and soil moisture regime indicate to the need for regulation of soil and the need for irrigation.
