The city of Zagreb, nestled between the Medvednica mountain range and the Sava River, boasts distinctive natural landmarks that have played a pivotal role in its history. However, changes in urban development and the need for flood protection have led to the transformation of natural waterways. Mountain torrents have been converted into underground channels or controlled riverbeds. Nevertheless, contemporary approaches to urban planning and ecological sustainability now encourage new ways of revitalizing urban watercourses. Using the example of the Kustošak stream, within this study, we will highlight the principles of modern urban planning that combine ecological and societal well-being. The analysis of best practice examples points to opportunities for organizing watercourse corridors in urban environments while simultaneously preserving natural balance. A survey conducted among Kustošak stream users has revealed their perspectives on current stream management practices, as well as their desires and visions for revitalization. The ultimate outcome of this research is a proposal for stream corridor restoration that provides guidance for future steps. Revitalizing watercourses reintroduces nature into the urban landscape, promoting ecological diversity. Furthermore, it advocates for a sustainable way of life and creates a unique cityscape that balances natural elements with human activities. Ecological sustainability concepts involve the use of natural solutions such as green spaces, renewable energy sources, and water resource preservation. Integrating these principles into the revitalization of the Medvednica and Sava areas contributes to the vitality and sustainability of the city of Zagreb. Ultimately, the restoration of urban watercourses presents an opportunity to create a harmonious synergy between nature and humanity, enriching Zagreb and setting an example as an environmentally conscious and sustainable city.
