Abstract
Zmije su prisutne na Zemlji već više od 100 milijuna godina i naseljavaju gotovo cijeli svijet, osim Antarktike. Zmije naseljavaju različita staništa i uglavnom su mesožderi, hraneći se žabama, gušterima, pticama i drugim plijenom. U Hrvatskoj živi 15 vrsta zmija, od kojih su samo tri otrovnice, dok su ostale neotrovne i bezopasne. Zmije su ugrožene različitim prijetnjama, uključujući gubitak staništa, stradavanje na prometnicama, ubijanje iz straha i ilegalno komercijalno skupljanje. Važno je educirati ljude o zmijama kako bi se smanjio strah i nepotrebno ubijanje, te ih zaštititi kroz zakonodavstvo i očuvanje staništa. Zmije imaju važnu ulogu u ekosustavu, regulirajući populaciju glodavaca, a njihovi otrovi mogu se koristiti u medicinske svrhe. Suvremenim pristupima očuvanja i edukacijom, može se postići održiv suživot s ovim važnim članovima prirode.
Abstract (english)
Snakes have been present on Earth for over 100 million years and inhabit almost the entire world, except Antarctica. They are characterized by the lack of limbs, eyelids, and external ears, and have elongated bodies covered in scales. Snakes inhabit various habitats and are primarily carnivorous, feeding on frogs, lizards, birds, and other prey. In Croatia, there are 15 species of snakes, of which only three are venomous, while the rest are non-venomous and harmless. Snakes are threatened by various factors, including habitat loss, road mortality, fear-driven killings, and illegal commercial collection. It is important to educate people about snakes to reduce fear and unnecessary killing, and to protect them through legislation and habitat conservation. Snakes play a vital role in the ecosystem, regulating rodent populations, and their venoms can be used for medicinal purposes. With modern conservation approaches and education, a sustainable coexistence with these important members of nature can be achieved.
