Rurality is a concept lacking a unified definition, even though there are various methods for defining it. Quantitative definitions attribute numeric values to certain aspects of rurality in order to grade the rurality of an area on a scale. Quantitative definitions aim to identify what makes up rurality and which aspects to attribute it. The aim of this paper was to explore different attitudes and to identify certain stereotypes about rural areas, people and way of life. For the purposes of this study a random sample of passers-by (n=105) underwent a short anonymous explorative interview, the purpose of which was to gather opinions and attitudes on the subject of rurality and associated concepts. The collected data has been distilled into a series of declarative statements which express the implied stereotypes. Attitudes were classified into positive and negative groups, as well as in relation to the populace and locality. The majority of the expressed attitudes are positive and are based on a small number of stereotypes that are alike. A much lesser number of participants express negative attitudes, but a great amount expresses unexpectedly harsh stereotypes about the rural population.
