The wireworms of the genus Agriotes are polyphagous pests and it is proven that there are differences in damage caused by different species. The aim of this study was to determine the larvae of the five most common species (Agriotes brevis Candeze, Agriotes lineatus Linnaeus, Agriotes obscurus Linnaeus, Agriotes sputator Linnaeus i Agriotes ustulatus Schäller) based on morphology and genetic DNA analysis and to determine the reliability of the identification methods. In the 2009-2011 research in Central Croatian area, a total of 191 individuals were collected and identified by morphological keys and molecular analysis of their genomes. From the results obtained, the dominance of a particular species and the reliability of the identification method was expressed. It was found that the error of morphological identification was 31.94% due to the great similarity between the species. Molecular identification was successfully performed for all individuals, proving its reliability. According to the dominance level, the most common species is A. brevis, and A. sputator (eudominant). Species A. lineatus and A. ustulatus are less represented (subdominant), and species A. obscurus was not found. Statistical analysis found that there were no significant differences between the obtained results, indicating that the error in morphological identification was not significant. According to the results, the combined use of morphological and molecular identification is suggested for the complete differentiation of the wireworms, for the purpose of sustainable agricultural production and in accordance with the sustainable plant protection.
