For the further development of aquaculture, it is necessary to introduce new species suitable for breeding. Because of its peculiarities, meagre might be a suitable species for diversification in aquaculture. The aim of this paper is to analyze the biological characteristics of meagre and the possibility of their rearing by analyzing professional literature. Meagre belong to the family of drums or croakers (Scianidae) and, due to their size, are among the largest species of this family. They can grow up to 2 meters in length and weigh up to 70 kilograms. They are a migratory species and are widespread in eastern Atlantic, Mediterranean, Black Sea and Red Sea. As an anadromous species, meagre enters the river water for the purpose of spawning and comes close to the shore. They are more resistant to diseases than other fish species intended for breeding. Meagre meat is firm in texture and rich in nutritional value and has extensive use in culinary art. Its production in aquaculture has increased considerably over the last few years, including Croatia. The cultivation technology for the breeding of meagre is similar to that used for sea bass and sea bream breeding. There is a possibility of induced spawning under controlled conditions. Meagre can endure a wide range of temperature and salinity, which enables the farming of the species in ponds. Meagre is characterized by fast growth and low feed conversion.
