Abstract (english) During the period of modernism ornaments were being systematically avoided because it was believed that their visual and aesthetic value was insignificant. The intent was to completely eliminate any decorative form from household objects and architecture. For they disclose a great formatting potential it is necessary to reintroduce ornaments and reclaim their artistic value. The reintroduction of the ornaments is an ongoing process that reached its peak before the beginning of the twentieth century. Research was conducted with the intent to explore the ways in which visually valuable ornament can offer new forms that would be potentially applicable in the area of visual formatting. For this purpose a method of permutation was applied. The method of permutation has already been used in the past, but its vast potential has not yet been adequately put in use (Douat, 1772). The ornamental forms used in that procedure represent a part of traditional folklore and can be found in the collection of traditionally used textile in Museum of Slavonia Osijek. The attempts were made for the recognition of new formatting and visual values found in the already existing traditional ornamental forms. By doing that, a significantly different approach to the use of that ornaments was intended to be introduced. The research has yielded satisfactory results. By using the method of permutation new and unexpected forms were created out of the traditional ornamental patterns. That method has a great potential for it enables the presentation of all possible forms derived from chosen elements that enter the process of permutation. It has also been shown that various qualitative and visual solutions can come out of the use of different types of permutation (when slightly altering the procedure). Forms of traditional ornament gained a new and different significance because of this research. As a result, some newly found solutions kept their decorative features. The other forms have a potential to construct new visuals totally deprived of decorative elements and distinctiveness of traditional ornaments. The ultimate goal was to make the ornament recognized again as an art form and to present its potential in visual design. The research confirms that the ornament retained its formatting potential, and it is possible to think of him as an equal and integral form of aesthetic considerations and production. 12 The contribution of this theses can be found in the revival of one of the visual areas which are still being avoided, and its placement on a par with other forms of visual design. This work also opens an area of research that did not exist in Croatia, nor was it sufficiently represented within the literature on visual arts, or more precisely, on the issue of ornaments and decorative features.
