It is no coincidence that the circle is a powerful tool in the work of dance movement therapists. The circle is one of the fundamental symbols of the human psyche. For C.G. Jung (1968), the most important symbolic expression for the totality of the Self is the mandala (the word for a circle in sanskrit). In religious practices and in the realm of psychology, mandalas are circular images that are drawn, painted, modeled, or danced. For many nations, the circle is a symbol of harmony, unity and strength, and the early use of the circle and circular shapes can be seen on all continents and in all periods of mankind. Circles work to bring people together, keep people together, share experiences and emotions, provide strength and support for the important times in one’s life. It is natural for this structure to be used in dance movement therapy, as it provides a safe and supporting structure for the therapeutic process leading to integration and healing. This was first noticed by Marian Chace, the mother of dance movement therapy, who used the circle extensively in her work. The formation of a circle, provides space and structure where there is an equal division, everyone is equal within the circle. Circle in dance movement therapy can create a sense of togetherness, belonging, support, stability, provide new perspectives on ways of movement and existence. With this work, the author provides a concise overview of the literature on the topic and draws her own conclusions about the circle as a powerful symbol that promotes the healing process in dance movement therapy.
