Shallow water bodies, including ponds, canals, lakes, are ecosystems with great diversity of flora and fauna. Due to their shallow depth and great transparency, they are an ideal place for the development of macrophytic vegetation that supplies the water with nutrients and provides shelter for a large number of macroinvertebrates. In contrast, due to its unstable nature, dry periods, the flora and fauna of these areas develop special adaptations for survival. Sampling was conducted in 2019 on both floodplain sides of the Danube. Samples of macrophytes were taken together with the associated epiphytic fauna, whose quantitative and qualitative composition was subsequently determined. Near Osijek, sampling was done in the Kopački rit Nature Park where 30 invertebrate taxonomic groups were determined, and 24 taxonomic groups were determined near Novi Sad in the Special Nature Reserve Koviljsko-Petrovaradinski rit. In both locations, groups of Chironomidae, Odonata and Ephemeroptera dominated. Macrophyte species Cetatophilum demersum, Utricularia vulgaris, Salvinia natans, Potamogeton sp. and Myriophilum spicatum were found in the research areas. The investigation of these localities confirms that floodplains with developed macrophytic vegetation support a great diversity of invertebrates.
