With the development of technology, there has been a rapid, almost uncontrolled spread of the internet which consequently increases content available on the internet through various services. This paper is divided into two parts. First part of the paper deals with the basic concepts such as the internet, data, information, knowledge, wisdom and in the relation with these terms, data collection. In addition, the first part of the paper describes the development of computer networks, mainly internet, from the theoretical concept of ARPAnet to the internet as we know it today, with the leading Web 2.0 technology. The second part describes technologies that have characterized the internet over the past decades as well as those prevalent today through the chapters of the World Wide Web and Web 2.0. Cyber warfare and the use of internet information space as the new battleground is also described. Furthermore, with the development of technology such as increasing data transfer speed, wireless connectivity, the emergence of the Web 2.0 concept as well as decrease in the cost of internet access, the amount of available content is increasing exponentially. In regard, a focus in the second part of paper is placed on the Deep Web and what it represents. In conclusion, although the internet is only a few decades old, it has undergone many changes. Although no one can give an accurate answer to the question of what is the future of the internet, following the trends in technology development and user habits, some predictions regarding the development of the internet are described.
