Insurance is a mechanism to protect individuals, groups, and legal entities from the occurrence of unpleasant events such as illness, damage, death, or as a form of preserving the value of money for the future. Stakeholders' confidence in the credibility and transparency of the insurance industry is based on a regulated legislative and regulatory framework. International Financial Reporting Standards and International Accounting Standards contain a number of rules and guidelines according to which the accounting system for recording, controlling, and reporting on business changes is formed. Continuous changes and faster dynamics of progress contribute to the development of business and the financial market, which also encourages regulators and legislators to monitor and adjust the framework for quality and transparent operations. Since the beginning of 2019, a new international financial reporting standard has been in force, which regulates the segment of financial and operating leases, called IFRS 16 - Leases. The most significant innovations relate to the method of recording operating leases, i.e. their recognition in the balance sheets of business entities in the full amount of commitments and the presentation of the effect of the application on business results. According to the standard that previously regulated operating leases, IAS 17 - Leases, operating leases were presented exclusively as expenses for the current period. Insurance companies, as obligors of the application of IAS and IFRS, will implement the changes that occurred with the adoption of the new standard in the accounting system, describe the activities and processes required for accounting and reporting and analyze the effects of application in relation to the previous standard.
