The significant increase in distributed renewable energy sources and the decentralization of production in the distribution network in response to decarbonisation policies are changing the paradigm of the functioning of the power system. The power system is transforming from a centralized system to a decentralized one, the distribution network from a passive to an active network (system) in which the users of the network are customers and producers of electric energy, seeking a secure and reliable supply of electricity, both in terms of energy abstraction and transmission of generated electricity into the distribution network. Transformation of the electricity power system will lead to a gradual development of the electricity market at the distribution system level, and the distribution system operator will have to become a neutral facilitator of distribution flexibility according to market principles, which greatly changes the role of the distribution system operator. The answer to these upcoming challenges is the digitalization of the electricity sector, as a tool that will enable advanced and smart solutions to meet the challenges and demands that have been set. A key and critical component of digitization are communication technologies and appropriate communication systems that will enable secure and reliable communication between distribution system operators and network users. With the development of communications systems and their increasing importance, it is crucial to choose appropriate communication systems and technologies that will be economically viable, in addition to providing a secure and reliable communication platform, which will be proven by a technical and economic evaluation of certain models of use of communication systems for advanced distribution networks.
