Abstract | In a world filled with everyday new emerging trends, showstoppers and glam-all-around,
fast fashion is not something new to the public. With styles changing globally every few
weeks, the fashion industry has taken upon itself a few decades ago the task to satisfy the
ongoing, fast demand - fast fashion came into place. A business strategy which speeds up
all of its processes from usual 9-12 months to 3; a system which gives no time to its
workers in any phase of the process, since it doesn’t know for time itself. As fast fashion
gives enormous profits to its companies and constant new products to its customers, it
also gives something to the environment: its worst. The fast fashion industry is one of the
bad players which led to climate change. Negative impacts here are numerous - water
usage being over the roof for production for a single pair of jeans - with also chemical
usage, the on-going carbon footprint and in the end, textile waste. In every part of the
production there is some kind of waste that negatively impacts the environment. This has
been going on for a few decades - and it can’t go for much long. The Earth is tired. It is
filled with too much waste, and ripped away from its natural goods. A needed change in
the industry comes by the name of slow fashion. A solution that is all that fast fashion
isn’t - responsible, long-lasting, ecological, durable, sustainable, recyclable. The name
itself describes the processes - everything is much slower in comparison with the first
approach, giving the production the luxury of time. Clothes are made with sustainable
and responsible materials, with a more unique note, in comparison with fast fashion and
its mass production. Every step of the process is aligned with the thought of goodness for
the environment - since slow fashion is something that will be here for a long time, same
as our nature. The whole point of this approach is to give a long-term, healthy solution
that will be good for both sides - the environment, the businesses and the customers. It is
much needed to start taking care of our businesses, because if we don’t, we won’t have a
climate to take care of either. |
