As of January 1, 2023, the Republic of Croatia became part of the eurozone, introducing the euro as the official currency and becoming part of the Schengen area. This marked the beginning of a new level of integration for the Republic of Croatia on the international map, and numerous changes occurred when it came to international trade. This paper conducts an empirical study on the changes in the used car trade after entering the Schengen area. The subject of the research is the attitudes of car dealers about changes and expectations in the international trade in used cars after entering the Schengen area. In order to carry out the research, two research objectives were set. The primary goal is to reveal the attitudes of dealers about changes in the international trade in used cars after entering the Schengen area, while the secondary goal is to describe the changes in the context of international trade that occur with the entry of the Republic of Croatia into the Schengen area. 52 used car dealers from the Republic of Croatia participated in the research. Analyzing the collected data and evaluating it, it was determined that used car dealers generally do not have too high expectations from entering the Schengen area but consider the Special Tax on Motor Vehicles (STMV) as a decisive factor in the trade in used cars. They believe that the abolition or reduction of STMVs can directly affect the increase in the import of used cars and the rejuvenation of the vehicle fleet due to the reduction in the selling prices of used cars. The accession of the Republic of Croatia to the Schengen area can have a positive effect on the used car trade in terms of simplifying the process of procurement, administration, and transport of used vehicles, but not to such an extent as to affect the growth of the used car trade. Entry into the Schengen area can positively impact the entire distribution trade and the Croatian economy to a greater extent than only the trade in used cars. Dealers in used cars point out that entering the Schengen area also has certain disadvantages, such as an increase in the number of illegal resellers of used cars, which disrupts the registered activity of the car trade in the Republic of Croatia.
