The fashion industry is among the leading polluters of the environment. Today, when more and more industries are turning to sustainable development, change is necessary in the fashion industry as well. The topic of this paper is ”Fashion industry in the context of green industry.“ The paper discusses the negative impact of the fashion industry on society and the environment. The negative impact of the fashion industry on the environment is already visible in the production phase of the necessary raw materials, primarily cotton. Cotton needs a huge amount of water to grow and the application of various pesticides that significantly affect the environment. Furthermore, in the process of clothing production, toxic chemicals and dyes are used and there is a huge consumption of water. The emergence of the “fast fashion“ concept has led to a reduction in clothing prices and thus the unnecessary purchase of clothing that very quickly ends up in the trash. Also, the increased need for production leads to the introduction of cheap work force. The paper reveals the dark side of the fashion industry and provides an answer to the question of what are the ways of transition of the fashion industry to the green industry. The use of cotton from sustainable agriculture, the recycling of clothing and its reuse, the reduction of production of harmful artificial materials, the reduction of microplastic, the ban on the use of natural fur are just some of the guidelines in turning towards green industry. The emergence of the concept of “slow fashion“ contributes greatly to this. All of the above is supported by concrete examples of fashion industries that easily accept the concept of the green industry.
