Sustainable tourism and its development can be defined as "tourism that fully takes into account current and future economic, social and environmental effects, takes care of the needs of visitors, sectors, environment and destination." It is important to point out that the practice, but also guidelines for the management of sustainable tourism development can be applied to all forms of tourism, in all types of destinations, including the City of Rovinj, which is the subject of analysis of this paper. The principles of sustainability of tourism development refer to the environmental, economic, socio-cultural aspects of tourism development. All three dimensions of sustainable tourism development must be met in order to achieve long-term sustainability of tourism development. It is important that the environmental resources are used optimally, given that they are a fundamental element of tourism development, and in tourism development it is necessary to maintain important environmental processes and focus on the protection of natural heritage and biodiversity. The sustainable development of tourism in the City of Rovinj must also respect the authenticity of the destination through social and cultural elements - it is necessary to preserve the built and living cultural heritage of the City of Rovinj and its traditional values that will contribute to intercultural understanding and tolerance. In the future development of tourism in the City of Rovinj, it is necessary to focus on sustainability that will ensure that economic and social benefits are created for all stakeholders in tourism by making a fair distribution. In addition, the sustainable tourism of the City of Rovinj requires the informed participation of all relevant stakeholders, as well as strong political leadership. Achieving the sustainability of tourism is an ongoing process that requires constant monitoring of effects, introduction of the necessary preventive and / or corrective measures, if necessary in the future.
