Startup projects are a specific type of project, launched with the aim of establishing startup companies, whose business model is based on new technologies, and innovative products and services. More than a hundred million startup projects are launched annually. However, only one in ten such projects manages to survive on the market. The main reason for the deterioration is the lack of market demand for the product, followed immediately by mismanagement of the project. From the above, the importance of proper selection of project management elements can be read. This paper investigated what the management of the startup projects looks like in practice by combining traditional and agile elements. The research was carried out on the example of the Croatian socially responsible startup project Rukoplastika, which produces adapted aids that enable persons with disabilities to play video games. The main method of data collection was in-depth interview with project team members. Research has shown that when acquainting clients, the project team uses a combination of the traditional element in form of detailed identification of client requests and the agile element in form of creating the product backlog. When developing the product, for the purpose of maximum customer adjustment, the project team combines four agile elements – iterations, daily standups, demonstrations and retrospectives. Finally, the traditional element of detailed planning is introduced during the production of the product for the purpose of precise performance. This way of managing the project proved extremely successful in practice, and made it possible for the project team to maximize the adjustment of their products to the target market segment, which at the moment sets them apart on the market.
