Sustainable finance refers to the process of taking environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations into consideration. In the last couple of years, there has been a lot of discussion related to sustainable finance. This thesis presents how the path to sustainable finance began, what are the current developments, and what can be expected for the future. The emphasis will be on green finance, the environmental consideration in sustainable finance. One of the events that may have helped trigger sustainable finance is the Paris Agreement adopted by countries across the world in 2015. The European Union has aligned with the Paris Agreement and committed itself to transition to a sustainable economy. Until today, many standards have been developed and strategy about transition to a low-carbon economy has been revised when necessary. Furthermore, two global companies’, Deloitte’s and KPMG’s, compliance with sustainable finance are researched, and presented in this thesis. Both companies have been aligning their operations with regulations set up by financial regulators. Initial strategies have been revised and new services were created to help their clients with transitioning to a sustainable business. After research and analysis of available information and data, there are still challenges that need to be addressed and stand in the way to sustainable finance.
