Abstract (english) Gross domestic product (GDP) represents the total monetary or market value of all products and services that have been produced within a country in a precisely defined period of time. Personal consumption, investments, government consumption and the difference between exports and imports are the four main components of a country's gross domestic product. The largest of them is personal consumption, whose share in GDP is about 60% in developed countries. It moves parallel with the gross domestic product, which implies the existence of a high correlation coefficient. Since the share of personal consumption is very high, it can be used as one of the tools for a faster exit from the crisis, but for the same reason, the duration of the recession can be prolonged if it is insufficient. In the continuation of this thesis, household consumption was examined in the period from approximately 1990 to the last available data, usually 2021 or the second quarter of 2022. Special attention is given to crises periods. The observed crises are the recessions of the 1990s in the United States of America, Japan and several countries of the European Union, then the Great Recession starting in 2007 for the USA and 2008 for the European Union and Japan, and finally the crisis caused by the coronavirus. The remaining components of GDP are less significant globally, however some of them are extremely important for individual countries, for example the contraction of exports in Japan led to the recession in 2008. In the last chapter of the main part of this thesis, household consumption is placed in the context of the economic crisis caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic. The fact that the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo have been postponed to 2021 is the best evidence of the strength and spread of the coronavirus. Consumer trends are liable to change depending on the situation in the economy and expectations about the future of the economy, which will be discussed further below.
