Lexical retrieval is a part of language processing that manifests in different modalities that require different processing mechanisms. Language processing is generally seen as a process with two levels regarding the units which are processed; the lexical and sublexical level. Sublexical processing is activated when the units are smaller than the word, such as morphemes and phonemes. Phonology is a part of linguistics that studies phonemes while phonotactics is a science that studies possible combinations of phonemes in a given language and the constrants that apply to those combinations. Beats&bindings phonotactics is a relatively new approach to studying phonotactics and it is based on the assumption that consonant clusters are more preferred if the consonants within a cluster have a greater auditory or perceptive distance. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between phonotactic preferability and the speed and accuracy of lexical rerieval. Fifty students with no developmental pathology participated in a lexical decision task. They read words and pseudowords that varied when it came to phonotactic preferability and the position of the consonant clusters within a word or pseudoword. Response time and response accuracy were measured and the responses were analyzed considering the effects of lexicality, phonotactic preferability and the cluster’s position. The results show that the only statisticaly significant effect phonotactic preferability had was on the speed of the processing of real words.
