Stress among students is recognized as a public health problem, and research shows that the student population has a high risk of developing psychological problems. Although burnout syndrome has been a frequent subject of research in recent years, little attention has been paid to burnout among students, especially among working students. For this reason, the aim of this work was to explore the relationship between the type of study program, the characteristics of studying and the jobs that students perform, and the severity of symptoms of burnout syndrome. The research was conducted on a sample of 74 undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Zagreb. The data was collected using an online questionnaire in which, along with questions about demographic data, a measuring instrument was used to assess the level of burnout, the Burnout Assessment Tool. The obtained results showed that there is no statistically significant difference in burnout levels of students of helping professions compared to students of other professions. Furthermore, no statistically significant difference was found in burnout levels between students who work in helping professions and students who perform other types of work. A statistically significant positive relationship was found between the number of working hours per week and the number of hours spent in classes per week with the severity of symptoms of burnout syndrome. The obtained data point to the need for further research on this topic in order to contribute to the recognition and alleviation of risk factors that influence the occurrence of burnout syndrome in full-time working students, and in order to conceive specific strategies and techniques for dealing with the consequences of distress in the student population.
