Abstract | Posljednjih godina, kao dominantni zdravstveni problemi mladih ističu se poremećaji mentalnog zdravlja i ovisnosti.
Abstract (english) | In recent years, mental health disorders and addictions have emerged as the dominant health problems among young people. Mental health can be studied in two ways – through the dimension of mental disorders or through the dimension of personal well-being, which is often referred to in the literature as positive mental health. Positive mental health and mental disorders are two separate but connected continuums that together make up an individual's overall mental health.
Given the increasing challenges that students face during higher education, the aim of this paper is to assess the mental health of speech therapy students, compare the obtained results with the general student population, and compare the results of speech therapy students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Data were collected using the Mental Health Continuum-Short Form (MHC-SF) questionnaire, which measures three dimensions of positive mental health: emotional, psychological, and social well-being. The study was conducted on a sample of 155 speech therapy students (mean age M=21.22, SD=1.52), of whom 81 students (51.6%) were at the undergraduate level, and 74 (48.4%) were at the graduate level.
No statistically significant difference was found between the results of undergraduate and graduate speech therapy students, although undergraduate students scored higher on the questionnaire compared to graduate students. The questionnaire results can be divided into three categories – individuals with high, moderate, or low positive mental health. The total percentage of speech therapy students with high positive mental health is 25.8%, those with low positive mental health is 4.5%, and the remaining speech therapy students fall into the group of individuals with moderate mental health. There is a statistically significant difference in the overall results and the psychological well-being subscale between speech therapy students and students from other fields.
The consequences of poor mental health indicate the need for significant investment in the promotion of positive mental health and the prevention of mental disorders across the entire population, especially among young people, in order to ensure a healthier workforce in the future. |
