Abstract
Odrasle osobe s ADHD-om suočavaju se s nizom poteškoća, a te poteškoće se često pripisuju komorbidnim poremećajima zbog čega ADHD ostaje neprepoznat i nedijagnosticiran kod velikog broja odraslih osoba. Istraživanja su pokazala kako odrasli s ADHD-om često koriste kompenzacijske strategije kojima nastoje umanjiti utjecaj simptoma ADHD-a, što dodatno doprinosi neprepoznavanju i nedijagnosticiranju ADHD-a kod odraslih osoba. U skladu s navedenim problemom istraživanja, cilj ovog istraživanja je opisati kompenzacijske strategije koje koriste odrasle osobe s ADHD-om. U istraživanju je korištena kombinacija kvalitativnog i kvantitativnog pristupa prikupljanja podataka. U okviru kvalitativnog pristupa korištena je metoda polustrukturiranog intervjua, a snimljeni intervjui su transkribirani. U okviru kvantitativnog pristupa korišten je Upitnik kompenzacijskih strategija, kreiran za potrebe ovog istraživanja. Rezultati istraživanja su pokazali da odrasle osobe s ADHD-om koriste raznovrsne kompenzacijske strategije. Odrasli s ADHD-om koriste kompenzacijske strategije kako bi se nosili s različitim simptomima ADHD-a te kako bi ograničili utjecaj tih simptoma. Nadalje, ovim istraživanjem istaknule su se i određene teškoće koje odrasli s ADHD-om imaju prilikom primjene kompenzacijskih strategija, a te teškoće zapravo proizlaze iz karakteristika ADHD-a. Također, istaknula se učinkovitost određenih kompenzacijskih strategija, dok su se neke kompenzacijske strategije pokazale kao neučinkovite. Na kraju, pokazalo se da odrasle osobe s ADHD-om moraju ulagati jako puno kognitivnog napora u korištenje kompenzacijskih strategija kojima žele prevladati simptome ADHD-a, a to podrazumijeva i ulaganje više truda u održavanje odnosa od neurotipičnih osoba.
Abstract (english)
Adults with ADHD face a range of challenges, which are often attributed to comorbid disorders, leading to ADHD remaining unrecognized and undiagnosed in many adults. Research has shown that adults with ADHD often use compensatory strategies to reduce the impact of ADHD symptoms, further contributing to the under-recognition and under-diagnosis of ADHD in adults. In line with this research problem, the aim of this study is to describe the compensatory strategies used by adults with ADHD. A combination of qualitative and quantitative data collection approaches was used in the study. The qualitative approach involved semi-structured interviews, which were recorded and transcribed. The quantitative approach utilized a Compensatory Strategies Questionnaire created specifically for this research. The results of the study showed that adults with ADHD use a variety of compensatory strategies. Adults with ADHD use these strategies to cope with various ADHD symptoms and to limit the impact of these symptoms. Furthermore, the study highlighted certain difficulties that adults with ADHD encounter when applying compensatory strategies, which actually stem from the characteristics of ADHD. The research also emphasized the effectiveness of certain compensatory strategies, while some were found to be ineffective. Finally, it was revealed that adults with ADHD must invest a great deal of cognitive effort into using compensatory strategies to overcome ADHD symptoms, which also involves putting more effort into maintaining relationships compared to neurotypical individuals.
