Gambling-related harm encompasses various negative consequences that affect individuals, families, communities and society. The negative consequences of gambling addiction include financial debt, deterioration of mental and physical health, disruption of social relationships and legal issues. Recovery capital is of great importance during recovery from gambling addiction. Positive recovery capital refers to the individual's strengths that enable him to achieve successful abstinence and recovery, while negative capital includes factors that make the recovery process difficult. The aim of this research is to gain insight into personal and environmental factors of positive and negative recovery capital among individuals who, after formal treatment, attend a support group to maintain abstinence. The research was conducted with treated gambling addicts using the focus group method, and the data collected in the focus groups were analyzed using qualitative analysis. The results of the research show that positive recovery capital facilitates and promotes recovery, while negative recovery capital hinders the maintenance of abstinence and recovery from addiction. Positive recovery capital includes personal growth and life satisfaction in the individual domain, paying off debts, renewed and sincere family and friendship relationships, secure employment, and a gambling addiction treatment program within the community. Negative emotions and unstructured free time, the burden of debts or absence of debts, complaints from family members and the potential for losing support, gambler friends, employment involving money, and especially the advertising of the gambling industry, as well as low societal awareness of gambling-related issues represent significant negative capital for recovery. Therefore, this research contributes to a better understanding of the treatment and recovery process.
