Abstract (english) The aim of this study was to examine the components of phonological processing in preschool children with orofacial clefts, compare them with expectations for their age, and investigate whether there are differences in the components of phonological processing with respect to the type of cleft. The sample included ten children with clefts of chronological age between 5;11 and 7;10 years (average chronological age is 6;07 years), without additonal difficulties. One participant has the hard palate cleft, one participant has submucosal cleft, four participants have the soft palate cleft and four participants have both hard and soft palate clefts. For research purposes some parts of "PredČiP" tests were used that related to the tasks of testing phonological processing, and those were: the tasks of rapid naming, phonological awareness, letter naming and phonological memory. Developmental profile was made for each subject, the success of solving each individual task was monitored, and average results were compared in relation to different types of clefts. The results show unevenness in the development of phonological processing skills in children with orofacial clefts. Normal results on all tasks were achieved by 30% of participants, while in others we observed uneven result development profiles. If only average test results are observed, then 50% of participants have normal results. Most problems were present in the tasks which test phonological awareness, rhyme and phonemic awareness, and the least amount of errors were in stylistic awareness and rapid naming tasks. When comparing the results with respect to the type of cleft, we noticed that the participants with soft palate cleft achieve a normal result in average, while particpiants with both soft and hard palate cleft achieved borderline result on average. Participant with submucosal cleft adhered result-wise to normal test scores, while the participant with a hard palate cleft is on the verge of normal and borderline test scores. These results indicate the existence of some difficulties in the various components of phonological processing in children with orofacial clefts, as well as slightly lower test scores in children with complicated and greater clefts (both hard and soft palate cleft in relation to soft palate cleft only), but due to methodological shortcomings, research results cannot be generalized to the whole population of children with clefts.
