The aim of this study is to investigate the relation between the speech intelligibility and music perception in four congenitally deaf children with cochlear implants. It was hypothesized that there is a connection between their music perception abilities and speech intelligibility. Various music tasks were recorded with the help of professional musicians, modeled on Abdi (2001), and the variables Timbre, Tonal height, Melody line and Rhythm were formed. The speech intelligibility of children with cochlear implants was examined trough the readings of the short story, minimally adapted to best match the frequency of sounds in the Croatian standard speech and the appropriateness of the level of readability of deaf children. The readings were recorded and presented to the students of the final year of Maters's Program in Speech Language Pathology, who then rated children’s speech intelligibility. From the individual success on the music tasks it is evident that for the children with cochlear implants perception of the melodic line and the timbre was the most problematic, while the perception of the rhythmic elements was the least problematic. Also, statistical analysis showed a strong correlation between the timbre and the tonal height, and between the timbre and the melodic line. The mean ratings of speech intelligibility were positively correlated with the success in the perception of the melody and the timbre, which is consistent with numerous foreign studies. Considering the significant positive correlation between the perception of music components and the speech intelligibility, it is advisable for speech language pathologist to continue researching this topic in the direction of examining the causal relationship between the systematic presentation of music for the pediatric cochlear implant users and the intelligibility of their speech.
