Uspješnost u procesu opismenjavanja ovisit će o čitavom nizu faktora: dobi nastanka oštećenja vida, motoričkim i taktilnim vještinama djeteta, njegovim kognitivnim sposobnostima, razini motivacije, podršci okoline i dr.
Abstract (english) As the foundation of literacy for blind people Braille is an essential part of education and academic literacy, but it is also important in everyday, functional literacy. The success in the writing process will depend on a number of factors: age emergence of visual impairment, motor and tactile skills of the child, his cognitive abilities, level of motivation, support of the child's environment etc. The knowledge and competence of experts are also an important factor in this process. Since teaching Braille is not only teaching the Braille code, but also teaching the skills of reading and writing and literacy in general, experts face a number of challenges in this area. In Croatia, there were no studies on this subject, however the results of foreign research show that experts evaluated their competence in the field of Braille literacy insufficient. Also, it has been proved that attitudes of professionals towards Braille can greatly affect the methods of teaching and expected outcomes in mastering and using Braille. The aim of this study is to examine what are some of the biggest challenges faced by educational rehabilitators in the area of literacy for blind people. The sample included educational rehabilitators of the Centre for Education and Rehabilitation „Vinko Bek“ in Zagreb who are currently working or have worked in any form of literacy of visually impaired people. The research was conducted through a questionnaire of own design, which gave insight into the self-assessment of professional competencies of educators in the field of Braille literacy as well as challenges encountered in that process. The results showed that the main challanges in teaching Braille are deficiency of assessment tests, lack of blind person motivation, use of assistive technology and lack of time in direct work with blind person. Also, there is a statistically significant difference in the assessment of the greatest challenges between the rehabilitators in relation to the type of study program completed.
