The importance of working on social skills is highly emphasized among experts and in literature, yet in practice it still often remains neglected. Drama methods are more and more implemented in the work with children with developmental disabilities, especially with those on the autism spectrum. The reason for that is that drama is an active method that allows them to learn social skills inside a protected environment, while imitating a natural surrounding. This thesis presents an 11-week program in which social skills ere encouraged through the use of drama techniques, along with artistic and musical expressions. This research has two main goals: to introduce the parent´s attitude towards the importance of social skills and their encouragement and to verify the hypothesis which states that using drama techniques in working with kids with developmental issues helps improve their social skills. There are two parts to this research, in the first part a semi structured interview with the parents of one child is used for assesment, while in the second the video footage of the workshops are analyzed. The interview with the parents showed that they recognize the importance of social skills and that they feel that it is being neglected inside the school system. They view drama techniques, as well as other creative methods, as a great motivator for their child and hope that the program will help improve his socialization. By analyzing the footage a positive improvement in the group dynamics and the members' relationship has been noticed. Improvement in certain areas isn't equally visible with all participants, but the results point that the program guides their social reactions in a positive direction. Both parts of the research show a need for further research on the potential of different creative methods in improving social development in kids with developmental issues.
