Abstract (english) Social skills are learned behavior, which we can improve throughout our lives. These skills make up for more successful relationships, socialization and greater satisfaction in relations with significant others that shape our everyday lives and affect our perceived quality of life. Adolescence is a developmental period that serves as a path towards grown up life and it is characterized by many challenges and developmental tasks. During that time, the development of one’s personality comes into focus, all the while one is in relation to the social environment whose acceptance shapes the persons self concept and affects the development of their skills. Research have shown increased vulnerability and difficulties in the social development of adolescents with visual impairments. Highlighted difficulties for the population are ones in making and maintaining relations with friends, social isolation, rejection and poorer social status. The aim of this study is to explore whether there are statistically significant differences in empathy and assertiveness of visually impaired students', regarding to their gender and degree of visual impairment (blindness and low vision). In the study we also examined the attitude and knowledge of the selected social skills so that we could deepen our understanding of the topic and its meaning to the population. The study included 20 visually impaired students, 10 of whom were male and 10 female students. 12 students in this study were diagnosed with low vision, and 8 were blind. All participants were 15 to 19 years of age and they had all been enrolled at the secondary school in Centre for Education of Visually Impaired „Vinko Bek“ while the study was being conducted. As far as data collection is concerned, we combined a questionnaire that was specifically created for the purpose of the study alongside questionnaires for the assessment of empathy and assertiveness. For the descriptive analyses of the results, standard Statistical package for social sciences IBM SPSS 20 was used. Model of Robust discrimination analyses was used to test the differences between groups, and one-way ANOVA was used to identify variables that affected the differences among the results. The results have shown that there are statistically significant differences in empathy and assertiveness of visually impaired students regarding to their gender and degree of visual impairment. Statistically significant difference has also been found in the attitude about the importance of selected skills. Statistically significant difference wasn't found in the visually impaired students' assessment of their knowledge regarding to their gender, but there was a statistically significant difference regarding to their degree of visual impairment.
