Stuttering is a fluency disorder which, although it primarily affects speech production, also has an impact on overall communication of the person who stutters. Those communication difficulties can reflect on the psycho-social profile of an individual, causing lack of self-esteem, social anxiety and decreasing quality of close interpersonal relationships. The aim of this study is to give a description of the impact stuttering has on close interpersonal relations of people who stutter in Croatia and the neighboring countries. Also, the goal is to examine the correlation between the subjective measures of self-assessment and the possible difficulties in emotional relationships with romantic partners, friends and family, and also to examine differences between men and women. A questionnaire has been made for the purpose of conducting the research, and it examines difficulties concerning general functioning in close relationships: functioning with friends, family and romantic partners. Furthermore, for the purpose of self-assessment, respondents filled out the 9 Point Scale of Self Report of Stuttering, a commonly used method. The sample consisted out of 71 respondents, and the test material was distributed online. The thesis also gives a detailed overview of recent scholarship on the topic of close interpersonal relations, as well as social and psychological difficulties of people who stutter. Respondents’ answers were processed by descriptive, parametric and nonparametric statistical analysis. The results have shown a statistically significant difference between men and women on the subject. Moreover, it has been proven that there is a statistically significant correlation between self-reported severity of stuttering and the impact stuttering has on romantic relationships and friendship, whereas such a correlation has not been found for family relations.
