Abstract (english) The central focus of phenomenological research on the effect of prayer on addict recovery through the experience of Cenacolo community members is the relationship between prayer and recovery from addiction. Prayer, as the original phenomenon of religious life, is used as an unconventional method of helping addicts, but its necessary to further study its effects. Thus, the goal of this research is to describe and develop the effect of prayer in the process of recovery from addiction through the experience of people who are helped by prayer in that process. The first part of the paper consists of a theoretical elaboration of addiction and prayer phenomena, as well as an overview of existing research on these two phenomena.
Furthermore, the principles of work and coexistence within the Cenacolo community are described because the research participants are members of the said community. Since prayer is a subjective phenomenon which is not easly quantified, qualitative methodology has been used. The conceptual framework of the research consists of the theoretic phenomenology of prayer. Six members of the Cenacolo community participated in the research (two females and four males) from Croatian confraternities in Vrbovec and Ugljane. The main method of data collection used was the half structured exploratory interview, which consisted of the following thematic units: meaning of prayer in the lives of participants before joining the community, description of concrete experience of practical use of prayer, meaning of addiction and effect of prayer on recovery from addiction. As a method of data analysis, thematic analysis was used, which summarized source sentences into a thematic map. Only sets of data which were relevant for all participants were used.
Research participants verbalize their own transformation with the help of prayer on the road to recovery from addiction. Specifically, prayer opens their hearts to the needs of others and pulls them away from selfishness, i.e. being focused only on themselves. Through prayer they get to know and accept themselves, they assume control of theor own ego and adopt a different way of approaching and solving problems. In addition, prayer replaces their internal emptiness with love and pulls them away from the feeling of loneliness, which gives meaning to their life. They see prayer as a spiritual ''tool'' in the fight against addiction and prayer motivates them to stay strong and persistent on the road to recovery from addiction.
