Voice therapy involves the use of various procedures in an attempt to eliminate or reduce deviations in voice quality, pitch and/or loudness. Voice disorders in children are usually caused by voice abuse and/or misuse, most commonly hyperfunctional use of the mechanism, frequently resulting in organic changes in the vocal folds, such as vocal nodules. Initial voice treatment selection is preceded by a multidimensional and comprehensive voice and quality of life assessment, which requires collaboration between speech-language pathologist and other professionals, e.g. primary care physician, otorhinolaryngologist, and psychologist. The involvement of parents, preschool teachers, elementary school teachers and other relevant persons in children's life is essential in the treatment of pediatric voice disorders. Furthermore, it is important to implement a variety of therapeutic procedures that are selected based on the type and severity of the child’s voice disorder and his/her individual needs. For the treatment to be successful, it is necessary that the child is motivated to change his/her vocal behavior, which can be accomplished by the use of engaging materials and the advantages of modern technology. The aim of this paper is to present relevant information pertaining to the provision of voice therapy in pediatric population, to outline the differences between indirect and direct therapy procedures, and to reveal data on the efficacy of voice treatment for pediatric voice disorders. The purpose of this review is to increase awareness of the importance of providing voice therapy services in preschool and school-age children.
