Abstract (english) The main goal of this study is to determine the relationship between self-compassion and coping with stressful situations among university/college students. This thesis will also examine differences, as well as connection, between gender and level of study considering mental health, coping with stressful situations, selfcompassion and perceived stress of students.
The research was conducted through online questionnaire during the period from 22th February to 20th March 2021. Study had a total of N= 429 university students from Republic of Croatia, with a sample of N=353 (82.3%) female and N=76 (17.7%) male. Moreover, N=213 of them are undergraduate students, N=215 graduate students and one of them is postgraduate student (N=1). The instrument consisted of: The questionnaire of sociodemographic data, The Self-Compassion Scale, Perceived Stress Scale, Brief Inventory of Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced (COPE), The Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale and Scale of Perceived Stress by special areas (designed for the purpose of this research). All data were analysed via descriptive statistics, Spearman's rank correlation coefficient and Median test which is is a special case of Pearson's chi-squared test.
Results of the survey confirm differences between gender and year of study in view of coping with stressful situations in a way that female students express more adaptive coping strategies with stressful situations (problem focused coping and active emotional coping) than male students, while undergraduate students use more maladaptive coping strategies (avoidant emotional coping) than graduate students. Female students, as well as undergraduate students, have higher level of percieved stress than male and graduate students. Further more, the results confirm a high negative correlation between percieved stres and selfcompassion. In addition, significant positive connection between positive mental health and selfcompassion is
confirmed. The results also showed high positive connection between selfcompassion and strategies coping with stressful situations, more precisely students with a higher level od selfcompassion tend to use more adaptive coping strategies.
