Alveolar ridge preservation techniques are complex surgical protocols that seek to reduce alveolar ridge resorption. The dimensional changes of the alveolar ridge that occur as a result of tooth extraction are larger compared to the changes of the ridge where some of the ridge preservation techniques were performed. The resorption process lasts 2 years from tooth extraction and is most pronounced within the first 6 months. Dimensional changes can significantly affect the possibilities and aesthetic results of future prosthetic or implantprosthetic works. Techniques for preserving the alveolar ridge are: alveolar preservation, immediate implantation, submergence of the tooth root and partial tooth extraction. Various augmentative materials are used to replace hard tissue, which may or may not be covered by membranes. The gold standard is an autograph covered with a non-resorptive membrane. Due to complications, difficult handling and additional membrane removal surgery, non-resorptive membranes are less and less used today. Absence or minimal resorption is a characteristic of the procedures of partial tooth extraction or submergence of the tooth root. The choice of technique depends on the future prosthetic or implant-prosthetic work and the knowledge of the clinician.
