Abstract
Poboljšanjem virtualizacijskih tehnologija te samim performansama hardvera, unutar telekomunikacijskog sektora razvio se koncept virtualizacije mrežnih funkcija (NFV). Tim konceptom se izvođenje mrežnih usluga kao što su vatrozid ili usmjeritelj, koje se tradicionalno izvode na fizičkom sklopovlju, prebacuje u virtualne strojeve i kontejnere. Tim pristupom postiže se lakša skalabilnost sustava, jednostavniji razvoj novih usluga te smanjenje troškova. Međutim, sa sve većim mrežnim brzinama koje se danas postižu, obrada samog prometa putem softvera je sve teža što zahtijeva skupa sklopovska rješenja. To je dovelo do razvoja novih programskih okvira za softversku obradu mrežnih paketa koji mogu postizati bolje performanse pri obradi mrežnih paketa pri visokim brzinama u odnosu na tradicionalni način softverske obrade paketa (mrežni stog jezgre operacijskog sustava Linux). Jedan primjer takvog programskog okvira je "Data Plane Development Kit" (DPDK) koji postiže odlične performanse zaobilazeći jezgru operacijskog sustava. U ovom radu kombinira se virtualizacija mrežnih funkcija s programskim okvirom za brzu obradu mrežnih paketa kako bi se razvilo rješenje za virtualizaciju mrežnih funkcija te se demonstrira rad virtualiziranog agregatora tokova.
Abstract (english)
With improvements in virtualization technologies and hardware performance, the concept of network functions virtualization (NFV) has been developed within the telecommunications sector. Using this concept, the execution of network services such as a firewall or a router, which is traditionally ran on dedicated hardware, is migrated to virtual machines and containers. This approach can achieve easier scalability of the system, simpler development of new services and reduction of costs. However, with rising network bandwidth today, traffic processing using software is becoming increasingly difficult because of which dedicated hardware is necessary. This has led to the development of new software frameworks for packet processing that can achieve better high-speed packet processing performance compared to the traditional way of software packet processing (Linux kernel's network stack). An example of such a framework is "Data Plane Development Kit" (DPDK) which achieves excellent performance by bypassing the kernel. In this thesis, network function virtualization is combined with a framework for high-speed packet processing in order to develop an NFV solution, and a virtualized flow aggregator is demonstrated.
