This work suggests a procedure for objective evaluation of quality of guitars and similar musical instruments. The procedure for acquiring parameters is based on subjective testing of sufficient number of trained examinees, as well as testing of certain number of listeners of various profiles. In this work an analysis of terms of musical acoustics is provided, with emphasis on musical tone and its definition. Special attention was paid to psychology of listening and parameters that enable subjective evaluation of sound quality. This work also discusses so called «music language», providing explanations related to different musical terminology and relationship between objective and subjective components of music: frequency, dynamics, power and spectre as objective parameters, and pitch, timbre, volume, tone brightness and roundness as subjective parameters, as well as rising of tone, scale and intervals. Additional attention was paid to definition of tone of the guitar, in the way that, beside general parameters, some subjective parameters were introduced. Since a musical experience is created by the performer, the instrument and the acoustic environment, it was deemed necessary to analyze the acoustics of space to a measure, while contributing parameters were associated with musical performance being affected by the acoustic space. This association yielded a smaller, but sufficient number of parameters for determining the quality of tone of the instrument. A reference was chosen from a selection of 30 guitars and subjectively evaluated. This gave results which provided basis for introducing the suggested objective measurement procedure which correlates well with subjective evaluation and indicates the prediction of contributing parameters in building new instruments by suggesting a way and approach to building them. All this leads to a conclusion that volume, focus and tone balance are first rate criteria in determining the sound quality of a guitar, while tonal brightness and roundness are second rate criteria in this respect. An impulse response measurement procedure is introduced, which to a certain measure can contribute to the final judgement.
