Abstract
The goal of the thesis was to find the accurate numerical method for simulation of pulse propagation in optical fiber and to develop the computer program for simulation of an optical link. The propagation equation for optical pulse propagation through the fiber is derived from Maxwell equations and it includes the main effects acting on the signal properties: fiber losses, group velocity dispersion, polarization dispersion and nonlinear effects. The solitons and DM solitons are analyzed and the advantages and disadvantages of their use in optical communications are discussed. The novel approach to derive the Gordon-Haus transmission distance limitation is given. For that purpose, the timing jitter, which occurs due to the superposition of the ASE noise on the signal, was thoroughly analyzed. The propagation equation is numerically solved by applying two methods: the Finite- Difference Method and Split-Step Fourier Method. The accuracy of both methods is tested, by comparing the numerical result with analytic solution of simple canonical problems. The Finite-Difference Method is chosen as more precise one. The computer program simulating the signal propagation through the optical link is developed based on Finite-Difference Method. The Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers were modeled strictly in time domain with the special attention to ASE noise model. Various optical bandpass filters are modeled as well. The capabilities of the program are demonstrated on characteristic examples of linear, soliton and DM soliton transmission systems.

Cilj disertacije bio je pronaći numeričku metodu što veće točnosti za simulaciju širenja impulsa u svjetlovodu i razviti računalni program za simulaciju optičkog prijenosnog sustava. Jednadžbe širenja optičkog impulsa u svjetlovodu izvedene su pomoću Maxwellovih jednadžbi. Opisane su glavne pojave koje uključuju slabljenje svjetlovoda, disperziju grupne brzine, polarizacijsku disperziju i nelinearne efekte. Analizirani su solitoni i disperzijom upravljani solitoni, te je provedena diskusija o njihovim prednostima i manama. Izvod za gornju granicu prijenosne udaljenosti uzrokovane Gordon-Hausovim efektom je proveden na nov način. U tu svrhu je analizirano vremensko podrhtavanje nastalo superpozicijom šuma spontane emisije (ASE) na signal. Jednadžba širenja rješena je numerički primjenom dvaju postupaka: metodom konačnih razlika (FDM) i pseudospektralnom metodom (SSFM). Točnost obaju postupaka je ispitana uspoređivanjem numeričkih rezultata s analitičkim rješenjem za jednostavne slučajeve. Utvrđeno je da metoda konačnih razlika ima veću točnost. Računalni program koji simulira širenje signala kroz optički prijenosni sustav izveden je na osnovama metode konačnih razlika. Pojačalo sačinjeno od odsječka svjetlovoda dopiranog erbijem modelirano je striktno u vremenskoj domeni pri čemu je posebna pozornost posvećena modelu ASE šuma. Modelirani su i različiti pojasno propusni filtri. Mogućnosti koje pruža program prikazane su na karakterističnim primjerima linearnih sustava, sustava sa solitonskim prijenosom i sustava koji podržavaju prijenos disperzijom vođenih solitona.
