This thesis deals with the implementation methods of an interactive application which functions inside the interactive television system where return channel is realized by using satellite link. The application is based on the Multimedia Home Platform(MHP) standard for interactive television. In the introductory part of thesis a brief description of digital television technology and the concept of interactive television is explained. Set-top box architecture and features of the MHP standard relevant for better understanding of implemented interactive application are described. Some issues regarding the MHP standard which could slow down its adoption are also discussed. J2EE multitier application model is explained and the benefits of its possible application for interactive television applications are specified. The architecture of satellite system for the interactive television for which the application is implemented is briefly described. An overview of the application implemented following that model is given with special attention on its client tier and business logic tier. Problems of graphical user interface development for interactive television applications have been specified. A framework for personalization of graphical user interface in the interactive television is proposed and described in detail along with examples of its usage. Communication interface is developped as a part of business logic tier which allows for simpler development and testing of applications in offline environment where satellite network is not present.
