Abstract
Doktorska disertacija se bavi analizom efikasnosti prilagodbe različitih implementacija TCP/IP stoga komunikacijskih protokola prijenosu multimedijskih podataka i aplikacija (prijenos zvuka, slike i videa u realnom vremenu) u širokopojasnim računalnim mrežama. Praktični dio disertacije se sastoji od implementacije različitih TCP/IP stogova protokola (na primjer, Tahoe, Reno, Vegas, SACK...), različitih statističkih modela simulacije multimedijalnih izvora podataka, te različitih tehnologija i topologija širokopojasnih usmjeravanih računalnih mreža (ATM, wireless LAN, Frame Relay...), te analize ponašanja mreže u različitim opterećenjima, s različitim istovremenim tokovima podataka, te s različitim sustavima detekcije i kontrole zagušenja i propusnosti TCP/IP mreže. Cjelokupni praktični dio disertacije se odvija u NS2 sustavu za simuliranje računalnih mreža, koji je općeprihvaćeni standard u području znanstvenih istraživanja komunikacijskih tehnologija i protokola. Teorijski dio disertacije obuhvaća analizu postojećih i teorijskih TCP/IP stogova protokola, različitih načina prijenosa podataka u širokopojasnim mrežama (usmjeravanje, preklapanje), te različitih mrežnih tehnologija i obitelji protokola, kao i prijašnja istraživanja iz ovog područja i statističke analize prikladnosti pojedinih algoritama simulacije multimedijskog prometa u TCP/IP računalnim mrežama. Znanstveni doprinos ove doktorske disertacije je u određivanju prikladnih algoritama prijenosa multimedijskih podataka u TCP/IP okruženju, ovisno o različitom opterećenju i okolnostima rada računalne mreže, te u razradi potrebnih karakteristika algoritama detekcije promjena u okruženju i opterećenju pojedinih segmenata računalne mreže, čime bi se omogućila i dinamička prilagodba algoritama prijenosa, odnosno odredile pretpostavke koje moraju biti ostvarene da bi se izgradio dinamički prilagodljiv multimedijski komunikacijski sustav baziran na TCP/IP računalnoj mreži.
Abstract (english)
The topic of this PhD thesis is analysis of the efficiency of adaptation of the various TCP/IP protocol implementations to multimedia data transfer (real-time sound, image and video transfer) within broadband computer networks. Practical part of the thesis encompasses simulation of various TCP/IP protocol implementations (for example, Tahoe, Reno, Vegas, SACK), various statistical models of simulating multimedia data sources, various broadband computer network technologies and topologies (ATM, WLAN, Frame Relay) and analysis of network behavior under varying load, with simultaneous data flows and different systems for TCP/IP network congestion detection and control. The whole practical part of the thesis was developed within the NS2 computer network simulation system, which is the widely accepted solution in the area of scientific research of communications technologies and protocols. Theoretical part of the thesis encompasses analysis of existing and theoretical TCP/IP protocol implementations, various data transfer approaches in broadband networks (routing, switching), various network technologies and protocol families, as well as previous research in this area and statistical analysis of appropriateness of particular algorithms for simulating multimedia traffic in TCP/IP computer networks. The scientific contribution of this thesis included identification of the appropriate algorithms for multimedia data transfer in the TCP/IP environment, depending of the network load and operating conditions, as well as in the development of the necessary characteristics of network load and operating conditions monitoring algorithms, which would enable dynamic adaptation of data transfer algorithms and therefore identify the necessary conditions for architecting a dynamically adaptable multimedia communications system based on a TCP/IP computer network.
