The electric traction is energetically more efficient and ecologically more acceptable than the diesel traction. The electrification procedure of the part of the rail network saves energy significantly, which is the first step in the saving process. In order to achieve the additional savings of costs of the electrical energy for the electric traction, it is necessary to continuously track and analyse the consumption of electrical energy. The analysis of the consumption of electrical energy and the insight into the current state of plant for feeding the electrical traction are the basis for defining the conclusions, fields that can be covered and activities that can be conducted in order to achieve the additional savings of the electrical energy, i.e. decreasing the costs of electrical energy. In this work the consumption of the electrical energy for the electric traction on the rails of the Croatian Railways Infrastructure (HŽ Infrastruktura), and the overview of the installations for electrical traction power supply and the calculation of measuring sites has been presented. On the basis of the tariff items of tariff systems for electrical energy transfer and supply and the unit price, the movement of operating and reactive energy, amount of the engaged energy and the structure of the costs have been presented numerically and graphically. The amount of the recorded electrical energy returned into the transfer net during the application of regenerative braking has been presented and the possible actions have been proposed that could lead to the decrease in the consumption of the electrical energy for the electric traction, and thereby to the decrease in the total costs for the electrical energy.
