In today’s world, everything revolves around computers and chess is no exception. Moreover, under the influence of the global pandemic, many people began to express interest in chess and started spending time on some service where they could play chess and popularity of chess grew rapidly last few years. As a part of this paper, a service was developed which enables users to play online chess against other users as well as against computer opponent. Frontend was built using React.js library, backend was built using Node.js, Express.js and Socket.IO libraries and database was built using PostgreSQL database management system. Paper also includes description of the rules which must be followed when playing together with instructions on how to use the application. All applications must figure out a way to validate and execute moves of a game. Developing of such a component would be costly and slow. Today, almost all applications use some sort of a game engine for chess like Stockfish, Komodo or js-chess-engine. Game engine can be described as a core software of a game which takes care of basic functions of a game. In case of chess, those would be calculating legal moves, check if any king is in check and eventually, the outcome of the game. All the engines are stated above are described and compared in terms of advantages and disadvantages between each other.
