In this thesis, a real-time messaging application using Microsoft Azure cloud services was developed and described. A three-tiered application was created consisting of a front and back end and data storage resources. The thesis further describes some of the common system architectures, including the microservice and serverless architectures, used in creating the backend of the application. The backend of the application is run on the Azure platform as an Azure function. The Azure platform and Azure platform services used in creating the application are described. Azure Advertising and Subscription Service was used to achieve real-time messaging. Using Azure services, it is possible to send data from the server to the client in a simple way. Azure Tables, which are part of the Azure data storage service, were used as data storage resources, while the front end of the application was implemented as a user android application. The developed application enables the exchange of messages between application users. It is possible to exchange messages with one user or with several users in the same group. Users can join existing users and create new chat groups. In addition to messages, users can also exchange images. The exchange of messages and pictures takes place in real time, and it is not necessary to refresh the screen to receive new messages and pictures. In order for clients to use the functionality of the application, it is necessary to register and log in to the application. Creating an application based on a serverless architecture significantly simplified the application development process, which contributed to the acceleration of application development. However, all the advantages of applications based on microservices architecture can only be realized on larger projects where more people or teams work. Through the deployment of Azure advertising and subscription services, it has been confirmed that the Azure service simplifies the creation of applications that work in real time.
