Abstract
Literature has always been influenced by social and individual changes. Works of Donne, Dickens and Fitzgerald are very good examples of this. They show how easily people lose hope and give up on their dreams. Their characters speak in the name of society of their time. Donne's poetry is full of emotions that change as his life changes. He writes about love, but at the same time about pain and dying. Dickens, on the other hand, writes about losing faith in humanity. Social changes of Victorian age influenced by the development of science and industry reflect on his characters; they try to find their place in this world. Fitzgerald also writes about social issues connected with the idea of the American dream. His characters are lost in time and cannot cope with their problems. All these authors portray the problems, emotions and hopes of the time they belong to. Different periods, different countries, different authors with different perspectives - the same everlasting themes about shattered hopes and dreams.
