Abstract
Vjerovalo se da su vještice moćne žene–čarobnice koje raspolažu natprirodnim moćima i magičnim sredstvima pomoću kojih nanose štetu ljudima i ostalim živim bićima. Od 15. do 18. stoljeća pogubljeno je nekoliko tisuća nedužnih žena koje su osumnjičene za vračanje i nanošenje svakojake štete, te koje su pod inkvizicijskim mučenjem priznavale sve što im je nametnuto kao «zločin». Progoni vještica ostavili su trag i u pučkoj usmenoj tradiciji. Vještice se često spominju u predajama i pričama te se uz njihovu pojavu vežu mnoge magične pojave, vračanje, čarobne masti i napitci i dr.
