Abstract
This research paper attempts to demonstrate how authors use their literary works to pass on covert messages. Wilde, Marlowe, and Twain established themselves as skillful critics of the society they lived in. All three of them successfully satirized society and human nature in their writings. Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest is a brilliant comedy. He discloses the pretense of society and ridicules its social institutions. Wilde exposes the superficial indifference to true love through the characters of Gwendolen and Cecily whose only wish is to marry a man named Ernest because they associate it with earnestness. He also criticizes the Victorian institution of marriage through Gwendolen’s mother Lady Bracknell who sees marriage purely as a means for profit. On the other hand, Marlowe focused on human nature. The protagonist of his Doctor Faustus is a tragic hero whose pride and hunger for power lead to his downfall. Faustus is a learned and respected man, but that is not enough for him. To satisfy his insatiable appetite for power, he makes a pact with the Devil. Consequently, his ambition and conceit push him into the flames of Hell. Twain’s Huckleberry Finn is another fine example of satire. He successfully turns an adventure down the Mississippi River into an exploration of the problems of civilized society in the American South of the time. Huck is a young boy, uneducated and uncivilized. He pairs up with a runaway slave Jim and they travel together. They are both seeking freedom. Huck is running from his abusive father and his guardian Widow Douglass who is trying to civilize him, whereas Jim is fleeing slavery. Helping a runaway slave, Huck constantly struggles between what society has taught him and what his conscience tells him to be right. Finally, he comes to see Jim as a human being and a friend. His adventure down the river turns out to be a journey towards maturity.
