Abstract
Subject is a theoretical concept which properly belongs to the domain of syntax. However, since there is a wealth of different and competing syntactic theories, the definitions and treatments of the category of subject vary drastically, which is clearly represented in the theoretical part of the paper. The grammatical function 'subject' introduces a prototypical category in which some subjects are better examples than other subjects. This requires a definition of the subject which includes a set of heterogeneous criteria on the morphological, syntactic, pragmatic, and semantic level, which may explain a greater range of linguistic phenomena. The analytical part of this paper narrows down our focus and concentrates on the differences between English and Croatian in the mapping between the syntactic function of subject and semantic roles. We have analysed a small database consisting of twenty English sentences and their Croatian translation equivalents. The goal is to show that English seems to be more flexible in the choice of semantic roles for the subject than Croatian. Croatian shows a greater tendency towards prototypical subjects, i.e. subjects in Croatian carry predominantly the semantic role of agent.
